Potato

Potato fruits are a succulent but inedible spherical, yellow-green berry, up to 4cm across. Underground, the edible root forms a tuber that can be a range of colours, sizes and shapes, depending on the cultivated variety (cultivar).

Potatoes are a starchy, tuberous root vegetable that grow from the perennial nightshade plant Solanum tuberosum. They are part of the Solanaceae family and are native to the Americas. Potato plants can grow up to 1 meter tall and have hairy stems and leaves with four leaflet pairs. Their flowers can be white, pink, purple, or blue with yellow centers, and their fruits are spherical, yellow-green berries that can be up to 4 centimeters across. The edible part of the potato plant is the tuber, which can come in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes.

Potatoes are the world’s fourth-largest food crop, after maize, wheat, and rice, and are grown in about 100 countries. They are easy to cultivate, high in nutritional value, and less susceptible to market fluctuations than cereals. Asia and Europe are the world’s major potato producing regions, but potatoes are also important crops in Europe, China, and India.

Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. Vitamin C can help prevent scurvy, potassium helps the heart, muscles, and nervous system function, and fiber is important for digestive health.
