Custard apple

The fruit of the common custard apple (Annona reticulata), also called sugar apple or bullock’s-heart in the West Indies, is dark brown in colour and marked with depressions giving it a quilted appearance; its pulp is reddish yellow, sweetish, and very soft (hence the common name).

Custard apple, also known as Annona reticulata or Sitaphal, is a tropical fruit that is medium-sized, roundish, and has a knobby surface: 

  • Size
    Custard apples are usually 4–6 inches in diameter, but can be as large as 8–15 cm wide 

  • Color
    When unripe, custard apples are green, but turn yellow or brown as they ripen. The skin may also have depressions that give it a quilted appearance 

  • Flesh
    The flesh is white or creamy-white and smooth, with small seeds scattered throughout. The pulp is soft and sweet, and has a custard-like consistency and flavor 

  • Smell
    Custard apples have a sweet taste and smell a little like vanilla
