Watermelons are part of the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, and are botanically the world’s largest berry. They are related to cucumbers, squash, and pumpkins, and originated in Africa. The plant can grow up to 10 meters long and has hairy leaves with three to five lobes, yellow flowers, and smooth, flat seeds. 

Watermelons can be eaten raw or pickled, and the rind is edible after cooking. The flesh is often served fresh, but it can also be juiced to make drinks. Watermelons are high in water content, antioxidants, and amino acids, and they contain many vitamins and minerals, including potassium, vitamin C, and lycopene. Some say that watermelon’s nutrients can help with workouts, such as reducing cramps and preventing muscle soreness.
